The Mysterious Death of Michael Jackson

Shelby Dewbre

Introduction

Los Angeles, California 2009: The famously known singer, songwriter, and dancer, Michael Jackson, was found lying unconscious in his home due to Propofol intoxication. Jackon was immediately transported to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at the cause of cardiac arrest at 2:26 pm, on June 25 (History.com Editors). Since Jackson’s sudden death at the early age of fifty, many conspiracies surround his death; was it staged, was he worked to death, did he know something he shouldn’t have?

Analysis

Who was Michael Jackson? Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana; he was a creative artist who incorporated many themes into his music to spread a message. Jackson was the son of a strict father named Joseph Jackson, who put him to work early in life and had ten siblings, yet he was the most successful; he had a successful career with dancing and singing, and was a great performer. Joseph forced him and his siblings to play music and would hit or whip them if they messed up a note in a song or a step in a dance. Jackson was physically and mentally abused, causing him to have “painful reactions to his father out of pure fear” (Crumlish,1).

Despite being a superstar, he was known to be gentle, shy, and a perfectionist. Jackson loved playing with children and having fun and was extremely humble for a celebrity.

A great trait Michael Jackson had was his gentleness. Jackson was always so gentle with everyone, but especially with children. Jackson was determined to provide children with great life experiences; however, his efforts were criticized by many other adults: "One of my favorite pastimes is being with children and talking to them, playing with them in the grass. They're one of the main reasons I do what I do," Jackson did not have the opportunity to have fun as a child, so fulfilling the dreams of other children satisfied him (Rosenfeld, Megan). He let children who did not have great lives at home sleep in his bed while he slept on the floor. Many people criticized him for having these sleepovers, but Jackson called it a “Beautiful thing” and that the people who thought his actions were strange, were ignorant (WorDirnhuber, Jacob,1).

Even though Michael Jackson was confident during performances, he was actually extremely shy. Jackson had a rough life growing up which trained him to hide his feelings whenever necessary. Jackson was shy when it came to interviews and being on camera, but was strong when performing because he had performed his whole life. When Jackson worked with Quincey Jones to make their first album 1979’s “Off the Wall,” Jones claimed “Michael was so shy, sometimes he’d sit down and sing behind the couch with his back to me,” Jackson’s shyness was an easy way to tell how great of a person he really was (Arnold, Chuck, 1).

One particular quirky trait Michael Jackson had was his perfectionism. Jackson would put all of his effort into making sure his performances were flawless. With his hard work and dedication, Jackson received the Heritage Award on April 29, 1989, for Career Achievement, compliments of Elizabeth Taylor, who introduced him as the “true King of Pop, Rock and Soul” (Bush, Tiana,1). Jackson’s drive to achieve perfection and his willingness to defy conventions in performances and music showed how much he cared about impressing his audience. Jackson is always interested in experimenting and innovating, like his album “Thriller” and how it changed the whole music industry, selling millions of copies and ranking first on Billboard, showing his hard work and determination to get there (Caulfield, Keith,1).

A controversy Jackson dealt with was a skin condition called “Vitiligo,” which caused patches of his skin to lose their pigment. This caused Jackson to be accused of being ashamed of his own race and wanting to become white (Knopper, Steve). In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, he stated that Vitiligo ran in his family, and when he first started losing his pigment, he wore makeup to even out his skin tone (Mubarik, Abu, et al,1). By the 1990s, his skin change was becoming extremely noticeable. Once he could not hide his condition anymore with makeup, he started using Benoquin Cream, which lightens the skin by decreasing melanin (Harris, John E.,1). Even after this controversy, Jackson remained a sweet man who loved children and made people happy through his music.

Argumentative Essay

With the mysterious death of Michael Jackson, to be analyzed, there are three main conspiracies surrounding Jackson’s life. From being worked to death, staging his death, and perhaps knowing something he should not have known about a so-called ‘abusive workplace’ under Sony could be the answer to this mysterious death.

The first conspiracy theory suggests that Michael Jackson was worked to death. According to Jackson’s sister, Latoya Jackson, “I believe that Dr. Tohme Tohme, Jackson’s business advisor, and his colleagues worked the poor singer to death,” Jackson worked his entire life, and Latoya believes that Jackson’s body just gave out, and could not take the pressure of work anymore (Shelton, Jacob, 1). However, this statement can not be proven because Jackson was already known to have some health problems. On December 6, 1995, one of Jackson’s bodyguards called EMS claiming that Jackson was not breathing during a rehearsal at the New York Beacon Theater; he suffered from dehydration from an infection he had prior to his rehearsal which caused him to have diarrhea and get dehydrated, this shows that Jackson had some health problems, and working on top of those health problems could cause the body to shut down, but Jackson was found dead with a large amount of Propofol in his system (Liefer and Mahomes, 1). This conspiracy theory is unlikely to be the cause of his death.

The second theory proposes that Michael Jackson faked his death to escape money and fame, and to this day he is still alive. There are many Michael Jackson look-alikes on the internet, and people who cannot accept this singer's death believe the look-alikes are Jackson. Some theorists claim that “a video, which emerged after the coroner removed Jackson’s body from his L.A. home, shows the coroner’s van pulling into an empty parking lot and the ‘real’ Jackson leaving the van and disappearing into a building, never to be seen again”. Jackson’s body was also buried in cement to prevent anyone from digging up his corpse, which is why fans suspect they are hiding something (Lamoureux, 1). However, his post-mortem report confirmed that the body that was buried was Michael Jackson’s (Michael Jackson Death Anniversary, 1). This theory is extremely unlikely to be true.

The last conspiracy theory is that Michael Jackson knew something he should not have known and as a result, he was murdered.  Michael Jackson was in London for a speech before he died, he said “Sony is killing music, and they are angry with me for leaving them, they are trying to get revenge on me by stealing my album. I am not supposed to tell you all this, please do not record what I am about to say. Mariah Carry, after divorcing Tommy Mottola, came to me crying and said that ‘this is an evil man’”. Many fans suppose that Jackson knew he was going to die after saying this speech and exposing Sony, many even believing Sony paid Conrad Murray to give Jackson Propofol intoxication (Speech against Sony). Michael Jackson’s son, Prince Jackson, testified that “When Jackson would get off the phone, he would cry, he would say ‘they are going to kill me, they are going to kill me’”(Duke, 1). This theory could be involved with his death.

Conrad Murray faced years in prison for involuntary killing Michael Jackson with Propofol intoxication, however; the events leading up to this murder will remain unknown. Was he worked to death? Is he secretly still alive? Or did he get wrapped up in the wrong crowd and simply know too much?

Michael Jackson has many conspiracy theories surrounding his demise from being worked to death, staging his death, and perhaps knowing something he should not have known about a so-called ‘abusive workplace’ under Sony which could be the answer to this mysterious death. With meticulous analysis, theories one and two have been ruled to be simply not true considering that Jackson was found dead with a large amount of Propofol in his system and his post-mortem report confirmed that the body that was buried was Michael Jackson. The solution is to remember the “King of Pop” forever and always for changing the music industry and wanting to make a change to the world. We may never know the truth behind his death, but we do know that if he lived, he would have made a difference to this world.

Conclusion

After examining the mysterious death case of Michael Jackson, three main conspiracy theories are still left to dwell on:

  1. Was Michael Jackson worked to death?

  2. Did Michael Jackson fake his death?

  3. Was Michael Jackson voluntarily murdered?

After examining these conspiracy theories, and learning that Conrad Murray caused this horrific death, evidence points to Michael Jackson’s death being an accident.
